António Gomes d´Oliveira, Ltd. became established in Funchal in 1942.  Ever since then it has always combined creativity with quality in its products. The company has been operated by three successive generations, dedicating its production and development of Madeira Embroidery to be sold in the local and National markets. 

As a result of the crisis in tourism and commerce after the end of World War II, the company opted to begin exporting its products. 

Today backed by strict quality criteria, the Madeira Embroidery producing company has an embroidery creation studio, which can be visited by tourists.  It also has three points of sale in the centre of the city of Funchal, on the Island of Madeira.  Maintaining its refinement and the Madeira Embroidery tradition, the company tries to adapt its products to different modern lifestyles, producing articles from household linens and bed linen to clothing for children and ladies.  Exports are essentially to the United States of America. 

The company adopted new sales management software for the control of production and sales.  With this system the company intends from Janeiro 2008 to elaborate an approach of controlling every item, allocating a series number which holds all the information about the embroidered item.

Abreu, Ltd. is a company that specializes in this art, where design innovation embraces the century-old tradition of embroidery and where all embroideries are critically selected, maintaining its high quality.  For this reason we were chosen to represent this art form in the last world exhibition of the century, at Expo 98 in Lisbon.  Like the oceans, Madeira Embroidery is our heritage for the future.  We export embroideries to Italy, Switzerland, France, England and Saudi Arabia.

The company was founded on 6 June 1925 by Adolfo Aires de Freitas Patrício and João de Deus Magno Gouveia.

With the constant growth in the volume of business, a large building was built in March 1948 at Rua Visconde de Anadia Nº. 34. It is the only building in Madeira conceived and constructed specifically for the embroidery industry. 

This firm is visited by approximately 120,000 tourists annually, as well as by students of various schools on study visits who thus have the educational opportunity to get to know each of the different manufacturing phases of Madeira Embroidery and in this way to understand better its present and historical significance and consequently, to value it. 

Besides local sales in our shop, which represents about 70% of our production, the company still keeps the tradition of exporting our famous embroideries, with exclusive designs, to a variety of countries. 

The main destinations of our exports are:  Portugal, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Angola, Japan, the United States of America and Bermuda, among others. 


On 7 June 1983, a Commendation of Industrial Merit was awarded to the founder partner, João de Deus Magno Gouveia, by the President of the Portuguese Republic at the time, General António Ramalho Eanes, of recognition by the Portuguese State of a life dedicated to the Madeira Embroidery Industry, which has exported the name of the island to the four corners of the world, via its finest and most exclusive Embroideries. 

This company works with a large range of articles including the 5 main ranges of Madeira Embroidery:  Bed linen; Tablecloths; Bath towels; Children’s clothing and Souvenirs.
